Chapel Hill Road

When my kids were young. We used to go to this particular amusement park on Friday nights when they had bargain night and me being me I used to take different kind of shortcuts out through the country to try to get to the place in the more unique and interesting way. Anyway, we were all six driving along singing songs and having a good whole time on the road that I did not know very well when it came across a turn a little bit too quick and I saw that I was right in front of a house with a whole bunch of toys in the yard. I was instantly horrified at the thought of some child running out in the road and me not seeing him in time it was an instant mood killer, as the joyful evening turned into a horror show in my head. In fact, I came up with an entire story of how things could’ve gone really bad and that is illustrated in the lyrics of “Chapel Hill Road”.

Musically the song has a very southern rock tinge, almost like Georgia Satellites, with my proudest moment here being the flange out acoustic slide lead that I put in the middle eight.

Lyrics

Well, my son’s got a gun and he’s a pretty good shot
He’s a crazy son of a gun, but he’s the best that I’ve got left…
Now that you’ve gone and run down my the younger child so cold
We’re now prepared for vengeance this day on Chapel Hill Road

The wives’ are on the move in search of some remedy
And that just leaves you, your boy, my boy and me
And now I’ll guarantee that tonight something crucial unfolds
A germane reckoning we will bring to Chapel Hill Road

Well, folks they claim that I don’t think before I act
But that is outta whack
For I contend that they don’t comprehend the complexities of my tact
And in fact…

The good book says “an eye for an eye”,
Well, we’ve got two for one and together you shall die
And let the judgment come from the demon upon which you’ve been sold
There you can beg and you can plead on the events of Chapel Hill Road

Some will claim I’m irrational and I’m trite, well not quite
For I believe that I will set everything just right, and it’s right that…

It says “eye for an eye” but nothing on “two for one”
So I’ll inter you suitably up in the woods next to your son
And disregard the irony, my lad is healing and will return to the fold
It’ll be the latest saga in the legend of Chapel Hill Road

Just the latest saga in the legend of Chapel Hill Road
Oh, you should’ve driven on a different road!
